The Avalancha team last week scouted the Quetrupillán volcano, 40km from Pucón. This will be the setting for the 5th annual Patagonia Avalancha en el Volcán event, which will take place between September 15-20, depending on weather conditions.
“Conditions on the mountain look very good, we’ve got a lot of snow and the forest at the base of the mountain is easy to walk through,” said Miguel Matos, the route planner for Patagonia Avalancha en el Volcán. “The main characteristic of this volcano is that it’s a very nice climb, with a varied route among thousand-year-old trees which change in shape and color as you approach 1300m above sea level. At this point, the surroundings transform into perfect slopes of virgin snow, with an altitude difference of more than 1000m between the summit and the finish line.”
This year, the activities organized by Patagonia Avalancha en el Volcán will involve not only the best riders, but will also, through the Avalancha Campprogram, include those who want to spend two nights with them surrounded by nature. There is also the Mountain Dayprogram, created for those who are less involved in mountain life but want to see the descent from the mountain itself.
All the programs include mountain guides and transport, meaning that this is a perfect opportunity for anyone looking for a unique mountain experience.
Our team has seen first hand the various points and zones which will hopefully be used and traversed by our visitors. Andrés Bozzolo, chief of operations for Patagonia Avalancha en el Volcán, tells us that they already have everything ready. “We will have the base camp at a height of 600m, equipped with lodgings, domes, bathroom facilities and a big stove to keep our riders and their friends warm. This will be the meeting point in the camp. The departure point for the descent is at the highest point of the mountain (on the northern edge of its crater, which has a diameter of over 500m), while the checkpoints will be on the sun-facing side and the finish line will be in the area where the forest starts.”
Throughout the rest of August and September, the Patagonia Avalancha en el Volcán team will deliver several presentations in Patagonia stores across Chile. The first of these took place last Friday in Puerto Varas, where the team showed videos and photos from previous years in a fun and friendly environment, along with event sponsors Corona beer.
The next presentations will take place in Santiago on August 27 in Mall Sport, in Temuco (Tienda Patagonia Mall del Portal) on August 28, and in Pucón, which will once again serve as headquarters for the legendary Patagonia Avalancha en el Volcán event, on September 4.
