Santiago Mountain Film Festival has opened the submission process for the South American films section of their 17th annual event.

The finalists will be shown September 29 in the auditorium of San Sebastián University, at their Bellavista campus in Santiago. The winners will be announced on October 1 at the closing ceremony of the festival.

Organizers state that professional filmmakers or amateurs from any country can participate. All films must have been produced from 2014 onward, must have been filmed in Chile, and have a maximum duration of 25 minutes. The type of films may be narrative, historical, animated or experimental. Deadline is Aug. 30. Participants will compete in three categories: best mountain sports film; best exploration and adventure film, and public choice award. There is no registration fee.

If the makers of the winning videos agree, they may also participate in a Mountain Film Festival tour of six other Chilean cities, as well as at other Latin America tour sites and the Banff Mountain Film Festival in Canada.

The Santiago Mountain Film Festival is a subsidiary of their Canadian counterpart. It is also a member of the International Alliance for Mountain Film. The Banff festival, which takes place every fall in Banff, Canada, showcases filmmakers who share their passion for mountains and a spirt of adventure. Altogether, the festival has events in 40 countries, including 10 in Latin America.

Last year, the Chilean competition included documentaries about the eruption of the Calbuco volcano, kayaking in the Fuy River, the third ascent of the Corcovado volcano and a Chilean expedition to Mount Everest.

In addition to the exhibition of films, for this year's festival they are planning a series of workshops and panel discussions on the protection of wilderness areas in Chile. As well, they will have a special tribute to the late conservationist, Douglas Tompkins.
