Ever since our inaugural Patagonia Photo Contest was launched in November of 2012, Patagon Journal has been fortunate to showcase the special beauty of the Patagonia region of Chile and Argentina through the eyes of our readers from around the world. With each contest, we’re constantly impressed with the photos we receive, and we’re excited to open the 5th Patagonia Photo Contest.
This year, the world is confronting a pandemic and many of us are cooped up inside, but we think you will find that viewing photography in Patagonia can provide an essential respite from our daily travails.
Like our previous contests, we will have Nature, Outdoor Sports and Travel & Culture categories for photos taken in the Patagonia region. This year, we will also have a Climate Change category that is open to photos taken anywhere in the world that show both the negative impacts of climate change but also positive images of how communities and people are working to rebuild human systems and restore natural systems to slow down global warming.
Each participant can submit 1 photo in each of the categories. However, you can submit up to 4 photos in each category if you purchase a subscription to the magazine.
The submission deadline is October 30, 2020.
Jury and Voting
The Patagon Journal team will be making daily selections that we will display on our website, Instagram and Facebook pages. In November, the public can vote for their favorite among the 40 finalists, and the photo that receives the most votes will receive the Reader’s Choice Award. Our esteemed panel of six judges – which this year include John Weller, Claudio Vidal, Nicolás Piwonka, Chantal Henderson, Romina Bottazzi, and Pablo Valenzuela – will decide the winners in each category as well as choose the overall winner to be crowned as the Patagonia Photographer of the Year.
Prizes
The winner of the Patagonia Photographer of the Year will receive a nature and photography trip for 6 days for 2 people on the big island of Tierra del Fuego with Far South Expeditions as well as 2 nights at Hotel Don Rey Felipe in Punta Arenas.
First place winners in each category will receive a gift card from Patagonia valued at 200 mil pesos (approx. US$265) for use in their retail stores in Chile, two beautiful, large-format photo books from Tompkins Conservation, and a complete collection of the Patagon Journal magazines (22 editions).
Second place winners in each category will receive a pair of ultra-quality sunglasses from Karün that are made from recycled plastic material from the ocean.
The winner of the Readers Choice Award will receive a kayak and trekking trip on Chiloe Island for 2 days for 2 persons with the tour operator Chiloe Natural, as well as a stay for 2 persons for 2 nights at Ocio Territorial Hotel, a 5-star hotel near the city of Castro.
Furthermore, all first and second place winners, three honorable mentions, and the Reader’s Choice Award winner will be featured in photography expositions, receive both a free copy of the official photo contest book and a subscription to the magazine.
