Issue 31: The Route of Parks

Welcome to Issue 31, a special adventure travel edition published in part for Adventure Travel World Summit 2025, which this week is being held in Puerto Natales, Chile.

Ten years ago, we also published a special edition for this annual global adventure travel conference organized by the Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA). That year it was held in Puerto Varas, and it was at that meeting that the great American conservationist Douglas Tompkins first spoke of his vision for a Patagonia Parks Route. “Conservation and tourism can help each other,” he told the gathering. Today, this extraordinary Patagonia park network is a reality in Chile, and it's the main theme of this edition of Patagon Journal. This issue has 25 pages describing some of the many highlights of the region’s parks.

Also in Issue 31, veteran travel guidebook writer Wayne Bernhardson contributes a story about the past and present of the Magallanes region, with tips on the best places to visit. Camila Rikli writes about veranadas, the traditional herding en masse of thousands of sheep to the high mountain ranges of Patagonia each summer. Our photo essay this issue showcases the outdoor adventure photography of Nicolás Gantz. There is also a special section on global adventure travel trends, and articles on fly fishing, mountaineering, the environment, and more. And the gorgeous cover photo of Torres del Paine by French photographer Timothy Dhalleine is just one indicator of the incredible photography you will find throughout this edition from a variety of photographers including Eduardo Hernandez, Teresita Perez, Ivan Berrios, and Benjamin Valenzuela.
