While international focus is on the December 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris, Patagon Journal, in partnership with Earth Journalism Network, is undertaking a project to highlight the effects of climate change in Patagonia. Our “Climate Change in Patagonia” initiative will feature at least six stories illustrating the human dimensions of climate change in southern Chile and Argentina.  The selected stories will present compelling research and data, include a mapping component, and preferably will be told through a multi-media lens.

 

We welcome proposals from experienced journalists, scientists, photographers, videographers, and cartographers, and are especially interested in proposals that explore:

●      Trends in changing weather patterns that affect multiple regions of Patagonia

●      How climate change is impacting communities reliant on agriculture, fishing, or forestry

●      Conservation and wildlife issues influenced by climate change 

●      Implications for development projects or regional planning because of global climate change

●      Indirect effects of climate change related to access to water, energy, and ecological services

●      Innovative solutions for mitigating or anticipating effects of climate change in Patagonia

 

Priority will be given to stories that are relevant to more than one area within Patagonia.

 

Selected stories and corresponding maps will be published on our forthcoming interactive website; may also be re-published by other media or organizations in Chile, Argentina, and internationally; and will be featured in a print issue of Patagon Journal. Authors will be compensated with an amount varying between $250 - $400 US. 

 

Story proposals of no more than 750 words should clearly explain the specific subject you would like to write about and your approach to covering it, mention any multi-media elements you plan to include, and what type of mapping forum you envision (see these examples for ideas). Please also include your resumé and describe a few potential sources for your story’s research, and any previous experience you have, if any, with the subject matter and/or region.  Proposals may be written in Spanish or English.
