Official Contest Rules

Organized by Patagon Journal magazine since 2012, this is the seventh edition of the Patagonia Photo Contest. An international competition focusing on the Patagonia region of Chile and Argentina and the world’s last wild places, the contest is open to people from any country except individuals who work for or volunteer with Patagon Journal.

CATEGORIES
Photos entered in the Wildlife, Landscape, Travel & Culture, and Outdoor Adventure categories must be images taken in Chilean or Argentine Patagonia. For this contest, we use the broadest definition of the geographical region of Patagonia, which in Chile begins with the Araucanía region and in Argentina begins south of the Río Colorado and in both countries ends in Tierra del Fuego. Entries in the special Last Wild Places category may be from any any country in the world.

• Wildlife: Animals and plants in terrestrial or aquatic Patagonian ecosystems.
• Landscapes: Capture the power, magic, and beauty of Patagonia's spectacular mountains, rivers, lakes, forests, steppes, and coastal ecosystems.
• Travel & Culture: Portraits of Patagonian life that convey a sense of place, or it’s spirit, from cultural traditions and rural lifestyles to the people and changing cities.
• Outdoor Adventure: Photos of climbing, kayaking, fishing, cycling, trekking or other outdoor sports taking place in Patagonian nature and the outdoors.
• Last Wild Places: Communicate the urgency of conserving, protecting, and restoring our world’s vanishing wild places. This might be, for example, highlighting threats to ecosystems, exposing the environmental impacts of human activities or climate change, showcasing rewilding or conservation initiatives, or creatively expressing the intrinsic value of wilderness.

GENERAL RULES and CALENDAR
Each participant may submit 1 photo in each of the five categories. If you subscribe to Patagon Journal, you may submit up to 4 photos in each category. Participants must be the creators of the content. All entries must be received by February 10, 2026, at 23:59 p.m. (Chile time).

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS
Digitally enhanced photos are acceptable as long as the final image is real and not created using artificial intelligence (AI), a composite of separate photos, or by adding, moving, or removing objects. If the judges determine that a photographer has altered their photo beyond normal editing practices, they reserve the right to disqualify it.

Photos must not include the photographer's watermark.

To be eligible for any category, images must have been taken by the entrant since December 2020.

Before sending the photos, each image file should be renamed according to its category (e.g., wildlife, landscape, culture, outdoors, or wild places) and the photographer's last name. Examples: "wildlife_perez_1," "outdoors_perez_1," or "outdoors_perez_2" if it is the second of two photos in the "Outdoors" category.

Photos that violate or infringe upon another person's rights, including but not limited to copyright, are not eligible.

Important: Each photo must include a title, location, and brief description. Including a great background story with details will help your photo advance in the competition!
